Stop...Demo Time!

Written by Kevin Page.

Is it just me or has the last few years brought us more new bands releasing actual DEMOS again, as opposed to jumping right into EP's or full length albums? It feels like another nod to the good old days, which you won't find me complaining about one bit. Anyways, here's some of the more potent ones you should check out.

Hey look, a 1 man band that isn't playing black metal! Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Contaminated is a death metal band that features Lachlan McPherson on well, EVERYTHING. It's raw, grimy, and thicker than a tube of Vegemite. It's savage sewer metal not for the faint of heart. But if you are like me, and can handle the taste of burnt yeast in your mouth, you'll be right at home here.

Is there no end to the viscous old school bands Iron Bonehead Productions plans to set forth on this planet? Chile's own Athanatos, which features two band members performing the (wait for it...) "cunnilingus goat vocals and axe" and the "cunnilingus serpent drums" are one of the latest to spawn from this German label. Playing a raw combination of thrashy black/death, the duo blasts through 17 minutes and 4 songs with little chance to catch your breath. I shudder to think what Imperator does to the microphone if you ever catch the band performing live ;)

Before reading any further, I want you to click the link. Listen to the first song, then come back. Finished listening? Good. Now be honest, did you think those unholy vocals came from a woman? Come on, no you didn't. Holly Wedel (also of NexHymn fame) is a new name to yours truly and she's managed to frighten and scare the beejesus out of me (that's a compliment for those of you slow on the uptake). And not that it should matter at the end of the day whether it's a man or woman, but it's mighty impressive. This Denver, Colorado quintet finalized their lineup earlier this year with the addition of Moth keyboardist, Rhiannon Wisniewski (on bass here). This free download is 2 songs of old school death metal with a modern feel and focusing on big fat juicy riffs.

Our final band is Malthusian. Featuring members of other prominent Irish bands such as Mourning Beloveth, Abaddon Incarnate, Wreck of the Hesperus and On Pain of Death, what may seem on the surface as just another cavernous old school death metal band, is really much more than that. I've seen comparisons to Ulcerate and Portal, which frankly I don't see as relevant. It's not nearly as über dense as Ulcerate (or over the top punishing) and it's much more immediate than Portal. Sure, they are doing the blackened death metal thing, which seems to be beaten into oblivion these days. But sometimes a band comes along and puts their own spin on it and something about their style just clicks and makes you stand up and take notice. Released through Invictus Productions late last year, each of the 3 songs showcase a distinct flavor and multiple memorable moments. A proper full length album by Malthusian can't come soon enough.
